Painter, printmaker. Born in Oita-ken. Went to Tokyo when still young to study first ukiyo-e under Tsukioka Yoshitoshi then Western-style painting under Kunisawa Shinkuro. Teacher of Kawai Eichu. Specialized in portraiture, particularly rather saccharine bijinga. Also a newspaper illustrator.
