THE LATE EDO PERIOD (BAKUMATSU)
Поздний период развития японской гравюры часто связывают с введением цензуры в 1790 году, согласно так называемым реформам эры Кансэй (1789-1801). С этого времени все гравюры, предназначенные для коммерческого распространения, подлежат обязательной цензуре. С введением цензуры и ограничений на изображения куртизанок и актеров, получает развитие пейзажный жанр и жанр изображения цветов и птиц катё-га, а также изображения воинов муся-э.
Наиболее известными авторами укиё-э, работавшим в этот период были представители династии Кикугава, поздние художники династии Утагава, такие как Утагава Кунисада (1786-1864), он же Утагава Тоёкуни III, Куниёси Утагава (1797-1861), Утагава Хиросигэ (1797-1858), а также Кацусика Хокусай (1760-1849), который в уже 1770-х годах работал под псевдонимом Кацукава Сюнро, но подлинный расцвет его творчества приходится на поздний период развития японской гравюры.
