EDO (TOKYO)
Эдо (яп. 江戸) – букв. «вход в бухту, залив»– огромный мегаполис на берегу залива на востоке Японии, был фактически столицей страны в период правления сёгунов Токугава на протяжении XVII – XIX вв. и остающейся до сих пор (совр. Токио). Население Эдо уже к середине XVIII века превышало один миллион жителей. Существовавшая в те времен обязательная практика, когда даймё, правители княжеств, вместе со своей свитой были обязаны по несколько месяцев в году проводить в столице, способствовало бурному развитию торговли, ремесел, сферы услуг и развлечений. Городское или третье сословие, сформировало свою культуру, со своими центрами досуга, своими героями и своими вкусами. Именно в этой среде и возникло искусство укиё-э. Бурное развитее книгопечатания способствовало развитию станковой гравюры на дереве.
Издатели переместились из района Камигата в Эдо в конце XVII, а уже к середине XVIII века большинство издательств находилось в Эдо. Здесь же жили художники, резчики и печатники, создававшие гравюры укиё-э.
